Just tooting my own horn; Id been fortunate in that Ive never had to endure any direct adversity in my life til October. A week before my team would fly to Seattle for MRDA Championships I dislocated my ankle and fractured my fibula 20 minutes into our next to last practice. One of our officials who that night said I didnt make a sound but had a facial expression of complete shock. At the ER, the doctor and his staff strongly advised I be sedated with anesthesia so he could re-position my ankle. As someone who can take quite a bit of pain I refused the anesthesia and told him to just go for it. The nurse said it would hurt and she prepped for the adjustment by telling me to clench the bedside bars and bite the sweatshirt I was wearing........ Crunch Me: Is that it? Nurse: In my opinion, there is no way men would be able to endure childbirth, but you would be an exception. (Mothers, I know its not the same thing) Two days before my flight, I packed my skate bag assuming I would still fly with the team and watch from the bench (or if we were losing, put my gear and skates on in the middle of the track during halftime to both motivate our guys and also scare the shit out of New York.) After many opinions I opted for surgery since no doctor would clear me for two 6hr flights at the high risk of developing a potentially fatal blood clot. A plate and 6 screws were inserted on right ankle. As a result of an unjust trade off, I watched my team drop from 6th to finishing 8th on my laptop unable to help my brothers, molded to the couch with my foot elevated. Although Ive skated every week since mid-December, tonight I was able to participate on skates at practice for the first time in 99 days. (I also pulled a smooth cillysault during warmups as customers were still making their way to the exit) If youve seen me play, you know that 5 6 145lbs is more resilient, persistent, determined and tougher than many that are 6 5 275lbs. So to NYSE and all Maelstroms 2015 opponents; Cilantro is back with a weak RIGHT ANKLE and I dare anyone to take their best shot at it. Thank you all for the piggy backs, friendly visits, checking up messages, coming to the ER, carrying pizza across the street, holding my crutches while I drive the electric scooter in market basket, donuts, car rides, company while watching champs, advice, words of encouragement, support of what Ive accomplished and the excitement for what Im still gonna achieve.
