Just wanted to drop a few notes here to thank everyone that donates their time, money and prayers for SLR so that we can save Schnauzers! This week, SLR agreed to pull a young male Schauzer from a shelter in Saraland where we knew his fate would be sealed if we turned our head and walked away. We named him Tripp, without knowing the trip that we were about to start on with him. Within a few hours of when we dropped Tripp off at a rescue vet, we learned that little Tripp was in very bad shape. His neuter site was already infected and needed immediate attention. His skin and coat were simply awful and a diagnosis of scabies was presented to us. Scabies is very contagious and requires a quarantine area for several weeks while being treated (not an easy task to locate a quarantine area that will accept a rescue pup). Tripp tested a very high positive for heartworms, which also eliminated one of the best medical treatments for the scabies. His ears were infected, as expected. One of his back legs cannot bear weight and is unusable. Xrays revealed several pieces of buckshot in that leg, which is likely the reason for the break. The wound to his leg has long healed up but was never repaired and is likely a source of constant pain for him. He scratched non-stop due to the skin issues. Tripp has to be transported in a small crate and cannot be held due to the contagion. But, as I look at Tripp each time during the transports, he usually stops scratching long enough to smile at me and show me the kindest eyes that you could ever imagine. Tripp is certainly in pain and discomfort but he smiles to know that SLR has begun a process to heal his little body. Its sad not to be able to hold Tripp and allow him some human love that he obviously has never had. I write this little note to let everyone know that SLR doesnt always rescue the easy and cute dogs, that are usually pictured on our facebook pages. Dogs like Tripp come into rescue and require lots of rehab time and precious rescue funds to become the adoptable dogs that you often see on this page. We have started a trip with Tripp and will see it through. We cannot make this trip without a load of kind thoughts and prayers and especially a boatload of donations to SLR. We will not have lots of sweet pics of little Tripp as he has entered isolation at the vet clinic but we will attempt to have regular updates on his progress. SLR will certainly need a fundraising campaign for Tripp over the next few weeks but its difficult to tackle that and take care of Tripp at the same time. As you pull your own Schnauzer or other pet next to you later today, please keep Tripp in mind as he begins a journey to save his life!
