Just watched a tense little indie thriller called Blue a Ruin. If I hadnt have known better I would have guessed Jeff Nichols directed this film. Its very similar to his slow burner debut Shot Gun Stories and Mud but could also be compared favourably to No Country For Oldmen. The premise is simple a man wants revenge on the man who killed his parents. What makes this stand out to most revenge films is the leading man isnt your atypical hero or anti hero. The actor here looks like a weedy bank manager but that doesnt make him any less compelling with his motives and honour of his revenge. Surprisingly enough the guy who nearly steals the show is the actor who played the fat bully brother in Home Alone. I suspect that both these actors will start seeing more mainstream work. This film also reminded me of A History Of Violence with certain pieces of dialogue tinted with dark comedy. Whats interesting about this production is that its the result of a kick starter fund. Jeremy Saulnier is a director to keep an eye on as this film was an effective thriller even if it is a tad bit predictable towards the end. 4 stars from me youtu.be/qYpuju1NGdA
