Just writing this not to spite but to hopefully contribute to an improvement of the system. My sister called me at work today, saying she was in the ER for high blood pressure with an accompanying head ache, feels that her head was about to crack. So I went to see her during my lunch break and found her with a blood pressure of 196/107 taken 40 minutes earlier according to the timing in the monitor. She was in tears as she thought she was about to have a stroke because of the head ache. Her friend who was with her verbalized that thats why we are here in the ER for emergent medication and she wondered why they were still waiting. I waited few minutes hoping her nurse would come so I can ask whats going on. Moments passed which seemed to have lasted forever, the nurse did not come. So, how would one feel finding your little sister in this condition in an ER of the same hospital where you work. So I marched out to the desk to ask if I can talk to the charge nurse. The first one I saw whom I talked to was a former colleague, the educator and told her the situation, and as expected of her being a known efficient, and a great nurse, immediately assessed the situation. Finding that theres an order for IV for high BP, she nicely called the nurse about it. She also came over to the room and rechecked the blood pressure. Soon, the nurse came with Labetalol IV. I went back to work feeling much better for my sisters sake after finally seeing some action and my sisters BP came down. Later on my sister texted me that she was admitted for overnight per her doctor and she is now in one of the rooms, a nice single room. I then called bed board and expressed my appreciation for the timely assignment of the nice room. By 7PM, I called her and asked if she ate and she said no, they havent brought her meal tray yet. I said you have to order it. She said, they did not tell her about it. I thought may be she is NPO, so I called her nurse and nicely asked her if theres a diet order. She said yes, its low sodium. I said to her, my sister does not know that. Oh, Im sorry, the nurse said, you want me to tell her? I said, no, thats ok, Ill call her. So I called my sister and told her to order her food from the Menu usually found on top of the bedside table. She had no clue. (what happened to room orientation?) I know this could be trivial to some. Perhaps the nurse in this situation is somewhere saving somebodys life who is more in dire need but still I feel obliged to write this. Thanks. 7/9/14
