KATWE Ward Councillor Mayborn Sikazwe has revealed that women are now giving birth at home due to failure to access facilities . Mr Sikazwe said, women in Chief Chitimbwa’s area have suffered beyond measures as there is only one Health Post which is in a dilapidated state. He said health workers have now turned their residential places into clinics a trend which he termed as unfortunate. He further disclosed home deliveries were impacting negatively on efforts to reduce maternal deaths as the mothers end up giving birth without the assistance of professionally-trained health officials. He said the statistics of maternal deaths in the area have risen as compared to figures from the early 90’s. Chimwemwe Simpito reports from mpulungu that , rural women faced a myriad of challenges including lack of transport to carry them to the nearest health institution.
