KENYA IN 2063: A GENERAL OUTLOOK. Kenya in 2063 will have grown from the plan of Pre-Vision 2030.Kenya will have become an African superpower and will have extended it’s geo-political, and economic supremacy in the region, continentally, and by extension to the rest of the world. Our main rivals in the continent will be South Africa, Nigeria and the North African nations as we try to live a higher standard of life. The population will have grown to more than 120 million citizens and the scramble for opportunities and resources will be ‘deadlier’. More high rise buildings will cater for the big population. A low mortality rate will be evident as the health sector will have have improved by leaps and bound as more referral hospitals and district hospitals will have been constructed. The economy will have grown but destitution will still be seen, especially the poor due to the more widened gap between the rich and the poor. There will be a generation of Kenyans who will have made money in Turkana due to the oil deposits discovered in 2011; Ngamia 1 et al.More mineral deposits will have been discovered and exploited; moreoil, coaldeposits, and precious stones in the Rift Valley, Western and Coastal regions and other areas too. The continued exploitation by mostly foreign firms will see the degradation of land and much would need to be done to rectify the same. We are seeing some of this continuing in Athi River by cement firms (like Bamburi and East African Portland Cement). The country will have to put tough legislation for environmental conservation. Much will need to be done in terms of land reclamation, reduction of pollution and initiatives like carbon trading will be adopted. Water recycling will be employed as well to deal with the scarcity of the commodity compounded by the huge population. There will be a new engagement on matters relating to and with the River Nile. Alternative sources of energy will also be introduced to beef up the already existing power lines. Apartfrom geothermal and hydropower, solar energy and windmills will be employed as well to power the country. The energy supply will be increased so as to power the industries. There will be a drive to better the nation more and the county governments will be running independently with little control by the national government. The county governments will be sourcing investors and partners from abroad and regionally and competition will be high among the counties. The national government will only be in charge of foreign policy, defence, fiscal policy and internal security as the counties will be able to run everything else autonomously. The national government will also be involved in infrastructure maintenance-power lines, airport, rail and roads (international roads). Irrigation will see North Eastern,Eastern, the dry Northern Rift areas and other ASAL areas improved and productive.Ukambani will be a breadbasket and many fruit and juice industries will be running there. Many international bodies will set up shops in Kenya. MoreUN bodies, aside from UNEP will establish their headquarters in Kenya. More airports will also be constructed as more counties will be sufficient and will have the capacity to export their goods and transport people to other parts of the contry, region and internationally.Isiolo,Mandera, Kericho and Narok will have airports. Smaller towns will have air strips to help in the movement of goods (commodities) and people. The railway line will traverse the whole nation and every county will have control over its railway lines. It will have the standard -two-gauge line. The national government will be involved in maintaining the rail standards, repairs and maintenance. Education-wise, we will have schools in every county from nursery to university level. We will have world-class institutions in Kenya that will have people coming into the country to study. We will have research centres and Research and Design(R and D) facilities will be all around the country as multinatinational companies will set up shop in Kenya all in the name of outsourcing and because the educational levels and expertise will have grown, they will have confidence in employing our personnel particularly in the R and D area. There will be more trust in our institutions like the police, judiciary and other government organizations and Kenya will carefully enter in to treaties and agreements. Also,Kenya will play a more active role in regional bodies like AU,COMESA and IGAD among others. We will have more stakes in the UN and it’s councils, particularly the Security Council. Our dependence on The Bretton Woods Institutions (IMF and the World Bank) will have waned as we will employ regional replacements to these institutions just as the Asian Tigers did with the Asian Development Bank. The African Development Bank will be stronger. In 2063, the constitution will have undergone some amendments asper, andin tandemwith the reality of the times.
