KENYANS LOVE SCANDALS?: The Kenyan preacher Victor Kanyaris - TopicsExpress

KENYANS LOVE SCANDALS?: The Kenyan preacher Victor Kanyaris shameless acts exposed on Jicho Pevu are being talked about and shared more through our lips and social media pages; whereas the work of genuine servants of God like Bishop Dr. JB Masinde, Rev. Margaret Mbaya, Rev. Tony Kiama, Pastor Joseph Obwanda, Pastor David Oginde, Rev. Kathy Kiuna is little heard of. Some will even go to the extreme of judging all servants of God as fake. Women who have contributed much to society are neglected and under recognized; whereas socialites who excite the public by twerking and deliberately doing scandalous things are now household names. The Dead Beat fad where men who allegedly have neglected their children was hyped up and became big news; whereas the honorable men who have been the best of fathers not just to their own children but the children of others go largely uncelebrated. Kenyans On Twitter trend scandals and mishaps, rarely would something positive or a non- complaint in nature trend. Political campaigns employ the tactic of character assassination where a low moment in a politicians life will be blown up, eclipsing all the good that politician has done for years. We itch to tell our friends of marriages and relationships that are collapsing; rarely do we highlight the marriages and relationships that are working out. And we wonder why so many young people are giving up on the institution of marriage. To sell as a musician many depend on scandals, whereas talented musicians often go unheard off. They rarely get played because they are not juicy or controversial enough. Pat Robertsons unfortunate remarks about Kenya and AIDS went viral, some in anger went to the extent of saying that his television channel, CBN which blesses hundreds of thousands of Kenyan viewers should be banned in Kenya. But when he apologized, little of that apology made rounds on our vibrant social media or mainstream media outlets. Same goes to Bishop TD Jakes misunderstood remarks. The media most often gives more airtime coverage of scandals as news, sensational headlines but positive messages are often charged as sources of advertising revenue. Its like news has to be what is negative and scandalous. Can there be more investigative journalism programs that celebrate heroes, heroines, champions, and those little known people doing big things? Must we wait for tragedies and public holidays to push a nationwide positive agenda? Must a Westgate happen for us to shore up patriotism and national values through the media? And we wonder why the society is becoming more wicked each day with us saturating the mass with negativity and scandals. If you are a public figure, all your good record will be washed away by one scandalous act, whether real or wrongfully spread about you. To the point that to survive public life means fighting scandals. Devilish news, witchcraft incidents, Illuminati controversies are shared more passionately than we do share testimonies and praise of God. When was the last time you shared something that is not scandalous in nature? When was the last time you used your lips and social media accounts to promote something or someone good? When was the last time you gave more focus to those who are standing for good and not the rotten ones in the pile? Dont say you are sharing the scandal to highlight it, because most of the time how we share it is how gossip is shared; the way of Ebu let me tell you something. Have you heard this? Perhaps this a reflection of how most of us are. The media behaves the way it does because buzz is important. And buzz is spread by itching eyes, lips, ears, Facebook users, Twitter handles that are looking for the hottest gossip. It is gossip because talking good about others behind their back is not gossip, but appreciation! Is Kenya a gossip nation? If so, we are tearing each other down instead of putting spotlight on the good. Is Kenya a gossip nation? Can good also trend? We determine that. It starts with you! ~Dayan Masinde
