~~~~~~~~~~ KITES TOUCH THE MOON IN BALI ~~~~~~~~~~ Flying kites is a popular and traditional pastime in Bali, and the people have been flying them for centuries as a part of their religious Hindu custom. They have been flying them well before humankind took to the air in pesawats, or aeroplanes. Already villagers are honing their skills for what has developed into the Bali Kite Festival, which is an international event now held annually every July in the Padang Galak area of Sanur. Traditional giant kites, four meters wide and up to ten metres in length, are made and flown competitively by teams from the villages in Denpasar. This event is a seasonal religious festival and sends a request to the Hindu gods for abundant crops and harvests, and really is a feast for all five senses. I have been watching the skies and listening to the kites, which have wire strung across them which vibrates in the wind, making eerie sounds as if they are communicating with The Gods.
