KNOWING YOU DONT KNOW IS REALLY KNOWING - CHANGE IS POSSIBLE! Our company gives me a training allocation each year. I hadn’t used my allocation for 2 years, so in the 3rd year, I pooled it all together and opted for an external course titled - “Critical Thinking and Creative Problem Solving.” My first curiosity was why such an over-named course would cost so so much – that curiosity was deflated when I walked into the course on the day. It had a maximum of only 10 participants coming from organisations like Barclays Bank, Pfizer Pharmaceuticals, NATO, Saudi Aramco Oil etc. I was even more blown away over the ensuing 4 days with the details of topics such as: Brain Dominance techniques, Whole-brain thinking, Leveraging left-right-brain, Adapting to others thinking styles, Techniques to becoming creative, Group creative thinking, Divergent and convergent thinking, Mind maps, Dissecting situations, Systematic approaches to problem solving etc THEN! It occurred to me, if these organisations, in spite of their successes, invest money into LEARNING HOW TO THINK MORE SHARPLY (and also how others think), with techniques that are backed by years of research and practice and results, is it any wonder, they can only keep on outperforming the rest of the world? THEN!! Again it occurred to me, the current outcries about our governing leaders’ inability to think, form visions, generate creative solutions to “home-grown problems,” think critically about the choices Ghana faces, etc, is not IMPOSSIBLE to turn around – Our Leaders can actually be TRAINED to acquire thinking skills and techniques THAT WORK consistently. IF and only IF we can accept that an Academic Qualification is different from Practical KnowHow! The problem is, once appointed into office, whether on the basis of Party-cademic or real Academic Qualifications people think they KNOW, the HOW too!
