KNOXVILLE WEST, Tenn. (1-1) at ASHEVILLE (3-0) Last year: Knoxville West beat Asheville, 34-20. Notes: Mark it down for posterity. Rarely does Asheville High and Jave Jones (516 yards, eight touchdowns) suffer from a disadvantage in athleticism or size. But that should be the case in this matchup. Despite losing last week, Knoxville West remains the top-ranked Associated Press 5-A team in Tennessee football and sports a 90-man roster. The Cougars have averaged 9.6 wins in Danny Wilkins 15 years as coach with 11 conference championships and a state title (2005). That explains why Asheville has to go so far outside of Western North Carolina to find a willing nonconference opponent. The Cougars clearly have their work cut out for them, but will be at home with the playmaking ability of Jones, Reggie Battle (366 yards, seven touchdowns) and Tevin Salters (411 yards and three touchdowns with no interceptions). Jones is averaging an astronomical 18.4 rushing yards per carry. On the other side of the ball, Christian Green (15.0 tackles per game), Destin Irby (7.0), William Flint (4.3) and Cade Pearson (4.0) have emerged as leaders for the defending Mountain Athletic Conference 3-A champs.
