Kalaiya Cricket Club has made a winning start in the Late Sunil Sarkar Indo-Nepal Cricket Tournament defeating Indian side Kesharbani Cricket Club, Gorakhpur by 23 runs here today in the inaugural match. Kalaiya scored 152-8 in allotted 40 overs before bowling out the opponents for 129 runs in 38.2 overs. Kalaiya’s innings was anchored by national vice- captain Binod Das who hit 2 fours and three sixes for his unbeaten 57 runs. Binod also took 2 wickets in the second half of the game to put hands on man of the match award.Kalaiya lost its four wickets when the scorecard was reading 66 runs. Opener Kaniska Chaugai made 4 and failed to impress while the other opener Shashi Keshari got 19. Binod and Subash Jaiswal played for a 52-run partnership before Jaiswal was bowled while playing on 9 runs. It was Binod who played sailor to save Kalaiya from sinking further and made sure his team reaches a fighting score. Bikash Dali contributed with 16 runs. Mahendra Singh took three wickets for Kesharbani while Ratnakar Ray and Nasim Ahmed each snapped one. In reply, Kesharbani failed to do well under formidable attack of Kalaiya bowlers. Off-spinner Sanjam Regmi and Suraj Timilsina each took 3 wickets giving away 20 runs in 8 overs. Binod got 2 for 25 in 7.2 overs while Shashi too claimed two. Rajdev Sukla scored 36 for the losing team while Pankaj Sukla hit 25 and Bishal Pandy 21. Six Nepali teams and seven Indian teams are competing in the tournament for the winner’s cheque of US$1,000. The runners-up will pocket a US $500 cheque. "This is the highest prize money cricket tournament of Nepal," said organising committee secretary Dharma Raj Giri.Earlier in the morning, mayor of Siddarthanagar Sagar Pratap Rana batted and deputy mayor Sher Bahadur Chhetri bowled to inaugurate the tournament. The tournament is named after the late father of national umpire Satyajit Sarkar. On Wednesday, Kalaiya will play Yeti Airlines.
