Kanlaya, Kanlaya, How does your garden grow? Well, not quite to - TopicsExpress

Kanlaya, Kanlaya, How does your garden grow? Well, not quite to South Farm standards yet, sorry to say. Great weather, plenty of water, lots of seeds, willing helpers, but absolutely sterile soil, devoid of nutrients, organic matter or structure. So its back to basics, lots of composting, deep digging with forks from England. Our veggie patch comprises about 25 little terraced beds cut out of the eroded soil which over centuries has formed an alluvial glacier of bright red Latterite soil, like fine clay, liquid the monsoon, like rock in the dry season. With difficulty we are now cropping carrots, parsley, chard, Chinese leaf, Sweet and Thai Basil, curley Parsley, and coming up, Cabbages, Borlotto in flower, Harlequin Squash in fruit, Zebra tomatoes with first two flower heads, Yellow Courgettes in flower, garlic well advanced under a mulch of rice straw. With advice from South Farm we will try green manure clover crops to add nitrogen and organic content. And lots more compost.
