Kapchorwa- The Uganda Peoples Defence Forces (UPDF) has finally captured what it called the army’s most wanted armed person who had been commanding several attacks on the Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) camps in Mt Elgon area. The army said Julius Chelimo, a former UPDF soldier who deserted the force, was arrested from his hiding on Wednesday as he attempted to kill Mr Peter Wamali at his home in Kubilat village, Kokomuria in Kapchorwa Town Council. The UPDF 3rd Division spokesperson Capt Jimmy Omara confirmed Chelimo’s arrest describing it as grand achievement for 2015. He said the army had been tracking Chelimo since he deserted the force in the 35 Battalion in Lolachat in Nakapiripirit district in 2011. Omara said on Chelimo’s capture, the army recovered one AK-47 machine gun belonging to the Uganda Police Force and 11 rounds of ammunition. Capt Omara said Chelimo killed several innocent people in various incidents including last year’s attack on the UWA base where two rangers and one retired UPDF soldier were killed in Kapkwen detach in Kapchorwa. “This man has been terrorising Mt Elgon zone and Sebei sub-region. With his arrest I believe the general public in Sebei sub-region will now rest,” Capt Omara said. He said Chelimo was detained at Kapchorwa Central Police Station awaiting transfer to Bugema Military Barracks for trial in the court martial. The UWA Mt Elgon Zone conservation manager Mr Adonia Bintora said Chelimo had been destabilising tourism activities in the area by carrying out killings. “He had also created insecurity among the community in Sebei sub-region,” Bintora said. monitor.co.ug/News/National/UPDF-captures-most-wanted-man-in-Elgon-region/-/688334/2584876/-/f2l4ksz/-/index.html
