Karen Custer Thurston writes to Wabash Memories fans: For some reason, I was thinking recently about the first time I ate shrimp, learned to love them and, of course, ate them as often as I could afford. I think the entire shrimp basket was 99 cents those days. The scene is Howdy Bobs Drive-in, circa 1959 or 1960, just west of Friermood Tires. I was a car hop with the Friermood sisters. The shrimp basket started me on my way to loving seafood. I would eat those tasty morsels on the covered seating area which overlooked the lower elevations of westside Wabash. My brother, Lane Custer will give me a hard time about being a car hop. If he is too ruthless, Ill remind him of the time Bettie Ann caught him at the Copper Kettle with a brew.
