Karnataka agribusiness: 17.7 % of proposed investments materialise Global Agribusiness and Food Processing Summit was held in in Bangalore in December 2011 Eighteen months after the global agribusiness summit, the State is set to realise investments of only Rs. 10,721.3 crore, which constitutes 17.71 per cent of the total investment proposals (Rs. 60,531.5 crore). While 24 companies have commenced the process of establishing industries in the agriculture and food processing sector, two have already commissioned their projects. Various companies signed investment proposals worth Rs. 60,531.5 crore at the Karnataka’s maiden Global Agribusiness and Food Processing Summit held in Bangalore in December 2011. Karnataka Udyog Mitra, a single widow agency, has cleared the 26 projects involving land requirement of about 13,592 acres in various districts. While 25 companies sought 742 acres, Wadhawan Mega Infrastructure Ltd. alone sought 12,850 acres in six districts. The projects are expected to generate 6,658 jobs. , According to officials in Karnataka State Agricultural Produce Processing and Export Corporation (KAPPEC) Ltd., Bangalore-based Zakinl Biotech Pvt. Ltd. has invested Rs. 50 crore and commissioned a processing unit in Chamarajanagar. The unit has come up on 132 acres of land and it will handle herbs, vegetables, and finished and frozen food products. Kolar-based M.G. Wholesale Market Fruits and Vegetables Ltd. has invested Rs. 14.75 crore and commissioned its plant. The plant has come up on 5 acres of land at Mulbagal in Kolar district. The company deals in wholesale marketing of fruits and vegetables. Five projects will come up in Bangalore Rural district, four in Ramanagaram, three in Belgaum and two each in Chamarajanagar, Hassan, Bijapur and Tumkur districts. Officials said Wadhawan Mega Infrastructure Ltd. had sought 12,850 acres of land in Belgaum, Haveri, Gadag, Mysore, Bagalkot and Yadgir districts for investment of Rs. 10,000 crore in agribusiness corridor of excellence, knowledge hub and post-harvest infrastructure. Only 800 to 1,000 acres of land would be given to the company in the first phase and the Karnataka Industrial Areas Development Board would acquire the land. The land would be given to the company based on its expansion plans in the subsequent phases, they said.
