Karnataka politicians order widening of roads and laying of pipelines through core areas of tiger reserves It seems politicians in Karnataka are just not bothered about the future of endangered tigers. With a clear aim to win votes, these politicians order widening of roads and laying of water pipelines through core areas of tiger reserves and national parks without any permission from the competent authority. And for this, the politicians have been allegedly arm-twisting the local government officials, an independent inquiry by the National Tiger Conservation Authority has revealed. Their actions are in direct violation of various laws formulated to protect the wildlife, which is facing threats of multiple kinds, according to wildlife biologists and conservationists. In many of the cases, permission has not been taken from the Central Empowered Committee (CEC), appointed by the Supreme Court, to carry out the development works inside the tiger reserve. These glaring irregularities have been brought to the fore after the Assistant Inspector General of Forests of the National Tiger Conservation Authority (NTCA) conducted an independent inquiry following complaints from wildlife enthusiasts. Though the report clearly mentions that politicians have forced officials to undertake development works inside the tiger reserve, it has not given their names. “The report was submitted to the Member Secretary, NTCA, Ministry of Environment and Forests, in June. But development works inside the tiger reserves are continuing with scant regard for law, putting the wildlife to serious threats,” a leading tiger conservationist pointed out. In his report, the Assistant Inspector General of Forests of NTCA has made observations on how politicians forced the officials to carry out the works.
