Karr Family residence....... Located just across the street from St. Elizabeths Hospital. Adam Karr was the president of the Karr Supply Company, Belleville, IL. Adam was born in Belleville to Adam and Catherine (Leist) Karr (both natives of Bavaria), 23 SEP 1862. After obtaining his primary education in the Belleville public schools, he pursued a three years course at Saint Louis University and then was employed by his brother, Theodore Karr as clerk in a leather store in Belleville. After a period, Adam became partner in that store and changed the retail business to that of a mill and machinery supply house. The venture was a success from the outset. Five years after becoming a partner, Mr Karr added heating and plumbing to the work of the establishment and the concern was incorporated as the Karr Supply Company, with headquarters at 129 West Madison Street, Belleville, IL. Adam Karr was known to be a strict supervisor but very generous to his employees. His men were devoted to Adam personally. Through his work, Adam Karr became one of the wealthiest and most influential citizens in Saint Clair County. Adam was a member of the Belleville Liederkranz, the Kronthal, and the German singing societies of Saint Vincents Orphan Society.
