Kashmiris avoid using Israeli made products 20 to 25 % decrease in sale of products starting with bar code 729; chocolates, cold drinks top the list: KTMF Srinagar, : Infuriated over Israeli aggression in Gaza people of Kashmir have stopped to purchase the goods sold under Israeli bar code. In solidarity with Palestinians, Kashmiris poured out on streets throughout the month of Ramadan and now the sale of Israeli products has also gone down. President Kashmir Traders and Manufactures Federation (KTMF), Mohammad Yaseen Khan said there has been 20 to 25 percent decrease in the usage of Israeli products in Kashmir valley since the Israeli’s genocide on Palestinians started in the month of July this year. After series of protests rocked Kashmir valley against Israel’s strikes on Gaza, the Israeli government for the first time had issued a travel advisory for the valley- asking its citizens not to visit the region. “There is a strong resentment among the people here against Israeli’s barbarism on Gazan people. Many people have boycotted using Israeli products in solidarity with Palestinian people,” said Khan. Khan said the prominent products people in Kashmir have stopped using were chocolates and cold drinks. “People have almost stopped using Nestle, Coca Cola and Pepsi. There has been a tremendous decrease in the sale of these products from last month. In Coca Cola we are witnessing 22 percent dip in sale while in Pepsi it is 17 percent,” said Khan. “It is true that many people have stopped buying cold-drinks from last month, especially the youth. We are witnessing around 30 percent decrease in sales,” said a shopkeeper in Lal Chowk. Last month, denouncing the Israeli attacks on Palestinian people in Gaza, Kashmiri clerics appealed people to boycott Israeli made products sold in Kashmir valley. “I have stopped drinking cold drinks, since I came to know about their origin. I only drink Kashmir made mineral water now. This is the least thing I can do to show solidarity towards the people of Palestine,” said Imran Hamid, a local youth. The social networking sites in Kashmir are also abuzz with netizens making pages with slogans like ‘Boycott Israeli products’. More than 1822 Palestinians have been killed in the Israeli attacks on Gaza, which began on July 8 and 9400 others have been injured. The most widely Israel products being used in Kashmir are L’Oreal, Maybelline , Ralph Lauren, Revlon , Motorola, Nokia, Nestle, Nescafé, Milkmaid, Maggi, Kit Kat, Milkybar, Polo, Siemens, Timberland, Coca Cola, Ambi Pur, Caterpillar, Evian, Barbie, GAP, Banana Republic, Hugo Boss, Tommy Hilfiger, IBM, Intel, Johnson & Johnson and Huggies. A barcode starting with “729″ indicates that the product is from Israel. ‘729’ is the Israeli Bar Code Association – EAN Israel. Students of various schools and colleges took to streets in the month of Ramadan raising slogans against Israel and America in solidarity with Palestine.
