Kathie’s Korner… “The Real - TopicsExpress

Kathie’s Korner… “The Real Deal Music” My husband, legendary guitarist, songwriter, Mike Deasy, my brother, Jim Horn, expertise on sax, flute, and recorders, and I, spent our younger lives, in music lessons, musical groups and bands, through school. I studied with a singing coach for 8 years, piano for 2. All of us were preparing for a life of music ! Preparation, study, and mentoring is not lost time and is critical for excellence. I have funny conversations with people asking me if I think music lessons are necessary? I think they are (my professional opinion), for all the reasons our performances contain, that others don’t, like reading music, being able to sing and play all styles of music, keeping correct time, stage or platform discretion and communicating first of all with the accompanying musicians and singers, by listening, and contact with the audience or assembly. A lot of the professional musicians and singers we were involved with had coaches, regardless of their skill or age, and they prospered in the business. In our 20 years of performing and recording in the Hollywood Studios and stages, we respected the “million-dollar-a-minute” time structure by being punctual, listened to the song, once through, from the artist and producers, learned our part, immediately, with no opinion or attitude about the song and recorded with others, making the song sound as good as we could, creating thousands of hit records ! It was a small group with 2 or 3 rhythm sections and singers, called for all the projects, to less than a dozen studios all around town (at that time). The Record Companies, Producers, and Artists, by request, kept us in demand for many hit records, and groups like: The Monkees, Elvis, Barbra Streisand, Clint Eastwood Movie soundstracks (Josey Wales, Dirty Harry and more), “Guess Who’s Coming To Dinner“, and on and on…Toy and Coke Commercials, T.V. Specials with Bill Cosby, Elvis ‘68 Comeback Special, and Andy Williams . I’ll never forget turning around quickly at a Johnny Rivers rehearsal only to elbow Elvis in the ribs as my husband was introducing me to him and the other singers !He was “dreamy” !! Music is a gift from God but after watching (briefly) the talent and music award shows, I, as well as my fellow music people of the 60s era( that will never be repeated) We are astonished at the criteria for success and attitudes to match, wow ! Glad I’m part of a fun, powerful, part of music history that continues to play on the radio stations (oldie goldies), movies, commercials and will always be : The Real Deal Music !!!
