Katy McDonough nominated me to list ten books that stuck with me, which I interpreted as made an impact on my life. While I normally ignore these nomination Facebook posts, this one is about books, and I cant ignore books. I also cant follow directions, and have come up with twelve (and two honorable mentions) 1) To Kill a Mockingbird - Harper Lee : This one started it all. 2) Where the Red Fern Grows - Wilson Rawls: I remember vividly my fifth grade teacher reading this to us and me making a KC Baking Power can to hold money. 3) Charlottes Web - E. B. White: The first chapter book I remember reading. 4) Harry Potter Series - J.K. Rowling: I was three books in before truly appreciating it all, and then watch out! 5) Green Eggs and Ham - Dr. Seuss: I remember reading this book a thousand plus times. 6) Two Boys Kissing - David Levithan: Levithan gives a silent generation lost to AIDS a present voice, and weaves a modern tale of our future so brilliantly. 7) The Right-Hand Shore - Chris Tilghman: The modern themes embedded in this Maryland house from the 1800s surprise and delight, as due the exactness of his language. 8) The Invention of Wings - Sue Monk Kidd: The character of Handful is a revelation, as is the real story this book is based on. 9) The Hours - Michael Cunningham: Cunningham makes every word count in this near perfect novel of three women living similar lives in different times. 10) The Grace of Silence - Michele Norris: One of the finest memoirs that examines the role of race in America through a personal lens, Norris chapter on the troubled history of Aunt Jemima alone is worth the read. 11) Cloud Atlas - David Mitchell: It took three tries to get into this challenging book, but the effort was worth it, if only to learn why he called it Cloud Atlas. 12) No Ordinary Time: Franklin and Eleanor Roosevelt: The Home Front in World War II - Doris Kearns Goodwin: No one knows this, but this is the first audio book I listen to when summer starts. Franklin and Eleanor have become old friends because of it. Honorable mentions: The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks - Rebecca Skloot and The Chronicles of Narnia by C. S. Lewis. I nominate Beth Clarke, Kelly Halvorsen, and Sharece Michelle Bunn. Go for it!
