Kelly Almond The Endangered Species I’ve been hearing lately a bit of what I’ve been observing for a while. To what degree this has contributed to the degradation of America is anybody’s guess. If you will indulge me with a few moments of your attention I would like to explain and therefore garner some response. Where has it gone…when did it leave…how did we let it slip away? What am I talking about? The possibly mythical, rarely seen creature known as the American Man. Notice I did not say male, but man. I’m not talking about the rah-rah, watch me flex, see how much I can bench press individual. Hell, I’ve seen some females that fit that bill. I’m talking about the man who will hold himself accountable to his ethics, morals, his conscience, family, and country. True enough I have made my own mistakes, chalking it up to youth, inexperience, and/or poor judgment. At the end of the day the responsibility of these mistakes rests with me. Hearing others talking about the bumbling, mindless, buffoons portrayed as men on some television sitcoms that have come to portray the American male in recent decades is disturbing. Having this become the standard that many young men see as acceptable is exceptionally unacceptable. We have accepted entertainment as reality and as a result reality has become so distorted that it is virtually undefinable. Moving on. The decline of the traditional family structure as I see it began when the government told families that we will help you out if you have no male father figure residing in the home. My loose translation…”Break up your family so we can declare you helpless and needy, allow the U.S. government to provide a meager existence so you will see us as your savior and will therefore blindly give us all your votes”. The result of this is largely producing a population of young men without a male father figure that haven’t a clue of what men really are. These youth then turn to each other for influence and guidance with little to no regard for their mother’s authority. The jails and prisons are filled with these young men. This enabling and entitlement society has produced a population who refuse to hold themselves accountable for their own actions and cast blame and responsibility on others for their lot in life. You can find them appearing on talk shows every day hoping someone will feel sorry for them and to get their 15 minutes of instant fame. “Why are women always drawn to the “Bad Boys”?” In most cases they are not. In my humble, but accurate opinion they are seeking a man with balls and an attitude to back it up. What is lacking in most of these ”Bad Boys” is any shred of chivalry, decency, self-motivation, self-respect, and most of all any respect for the women who are drawn to them. A few years ago my stepson (now a U.S. Marine) commented that I treated his Mom like a Queen. My response was simply that “If I want to keep being treated like a King then I need to continue to treat her like a Queen”. Women you are not immune to my ire either! Show respect and get respect! If you don’t get it in return…GET THE HELL OUT!!! I will not apologize for being an American Man. I will walk on the street side of the sidewalk, I will hold open doors for you, I will call you Ma’am. Those women who are elder will be shown the respect fitting of a mother and those near my age or younger will garner that of a sister. I am a man and I am damn proud of it. AMERICA IT IS TIME TO PULL YOUR PANTS UP, QUIT MAKING EXCUSES AND MAN UP! Kelly Almond - 8 June 2013
