Kelly came downstairs after her shower clad in her white tiger pajamas. That sounds like the start of a joke, doesnt it? No seriously. She did. And she will be marching down the street to catch the bus in these pajamas and donning them all day at school tomorrow because its Pajama Day. When she curled up next to me on the couch to let me run my fingers through her hair, I melted. Kelly is 14 years old and just so incredibly kind, patient and, well, how do I put this? Aware. She gets people. She never judges. Giving everyone the benefit of the doubt her speciality. If you let her down, shes still your pal. But shes learned her lesson and will keep her heart at arms length from you. My daughter is well liked by her peers and teachers. Kelly marches to the beat of her own drum. Im constantly dumbfounded by her perceptions, intelligence and incredible humor. Sometimes I simply cannot believe shes mine. The teen years are hard. And for Mothers and Daughters at this point, incredibly rough. Ive often told my own Mother she had a right to take me out all those years ago. But this has been pretty fun. And sometimes, when were driving somewhere with Jack buckled in the back seat, I realize shes not a little girl any more. Mom. Mom! Those two guys in the car next to us are totally checking us out. Pause. I keep hitting the pause button. But nothing happens. Either I need new batteries, or I witness my little girl become the woman Ive always known she would become. Now, if I can just persuade her to wear less eyeliner, read more books and listen to better music...
