He talked its ordeal and the truth he confided right before the announcement! Mr. Takahashi announced his retirement a few days ago. As a 2nd guest, he joined this program, “Figure Skaters’ Oasis ♪ KENJI’s Room” at JSPORTS of BS broadcasting newly started in October. The truth is, he had not made his decision to retire at the time of shooting and this turned out to be his last TV shooting as a competitive skater. The host Mr. Kenji Miyamoto, who is his choreographer as well as his drinking buddy and a good elder brother figure to him off ice, is the listener of Mr. Takahashi’s honest talk. According to this talk, he had decided not to do any practice at all since the last ice show held in summer until right before the new season to start. Mr. Takahashi, who has been leading Japan’s boys for many years, said that he has been skating hard in competitions “so that he wouldn’t lose”. He says, after the last season he went to his third Olympics, “At times it was hard even just getting up to go to the rink let alone doing practices. I thought, in that case, it should be better to stop it altogether and then later switch my mindset for the shows so that I can do a head start a month or two before. I don’t think it would do any good to practice half measures.” --To continue to compete or to retire? He shared his true feeling; he dared to walk away from skating so that he can wait and see if his motivation rise. He talked about the private part of his life openly, such as, the story of his going to a remote island to give a rest to his body and soul that have worked for the last 4 years. Furthermore, he revealed that he found a new hobby while he was recharging himself. “To be a do-it-yourself Sunday carpenter. No, it’s not that full-fledged sort, but I bought spray cans and paint or what not… To have them a hand-made feel, and I will try arranging my room with them,” said Takahashi san. Miyamoto san, who was poking fun at him on that at first saying “why?” admitted that he thought Daisuke’s room looked pretty cool when he visited it. Bringing his great sense into play, he announced that he would challenge to make a book shelf in the program. He remembered his childhood, “I was a grandpa’s boy and hated group life or activity”, and he admitted, “I haven’t skated with so much of a goal to aim for, and I didn’t start skating because of someone I aspired to be like, either. I’ve just been skating because I enjoy it.” He talked about the history from when he started up until now, and his own “ideal skating”. Also the talk about Japanese skaters Takahashi pays attention to with an eye to the future of Japan’s skating.
