Kentucky Awarded $6 Million to Assist Long-term Unemployed: National Emergency Grant to help train workers in high-demand industries FRANKFORT, Ky. (June 26, 2014) – Governor Steve Beshear today announced Kentucky will receive a $6,174,556 Job-Driven National Emergency Grant (NEG) from the U.S. Department of Labor. The funds will target the long-term unemployed and will be used to create and expand job-driven training programs for laid-off workers. “Equipping workers with the relevant skills that Kentucky’s employers require is vital to the success of the Commonwealth’s long-term prosperity,” said Gov. Beshear. “These funds will help Kentucky’s workforce development system deliver critical work-based learning and training to hundreds of unemployed Kentuckians.” The grant, awarded to the Kentucky Career Center in the Kentucky Education and Workforce Development Cabinet, will fund the Kentucky Career Center Get Opportunity (GO) program which will provide a variety of services, including on-the-job training, customized training and apprenticeships. Funding will also be used to provide services such as coaching, counseling and direct job placement to help connect laid-off workers, including the long-term unemployed, with available jobs. In addition to expanding work-based learning strategies, funds will be used to further develop and strengthen partnerships between workforce and industry organizations and align services with other federal, state and local programs. National Emergency Grants are part of the U.S. secretary of labor’s discretionary fund and are awarded based on a state’s ability to meet specific guidelines.
