Kidney Injury can occur in common situations such as falling onto the back or flank. More severe injury such as laceration are less likely in sports than would be encountered in motor vehicle accidents, nevertheless significant injury can occur in sport participation and renal trauma needs to be considered even in situations without blunt abdominal/flank trauma. Injury can occur in a coup/contra-coup mechanism. A thorough history and physical examination can increase suspicion in light of findings such as abdominal pain, hematuria, tenderness to palpation. If suspected it is appropriate to refer to emergency services or urgent medical evaluation for further testing and supportive treatment. Blunt trauma to the flanks sustained during even noncontact sports can result in isolated high-grade injuries to the kidneys. Hospital and ICU admission may be necessitated with renal trauma.
