Kingston: “Mom, I can’t be the man of the house.. I’m just - TopicsExpress

Kingston: “Mom, I can’t be the man of the house.. I’m just a kid.” Me: “Sure you can...” Kingston: “Nooo… if someone comes inside they can just hit me, one time in the stomach, I’ll be hurt! I’m not strong enough.” Me: “Baby, being a man starts in your heart, not your muscles.” Kingston: “That doesn’t even make any sense.” Me: “You don’t have to be big and strong to be a man. Some men are but that’s not what makes them men.” Kingston: “If someone came inside though he could… !” Me: “Being a man is what’s inside of you. It’s having love and intergrity.. to do what’s right even when its hard, to stand tall even when you’re afraid, to always love and protect your family and work hard so they can have what they need to live. Being a man is not always easy, it’s for warriors. But God made you a warrior and he will give your heart the strength to be exactly who he made you to be.” Me: “You know how I know you are strong enough to be the man of this house?” Kingston: “How?” Me: “Because youve already been doing it. And you have done an incredible job. You are a little boy today, but every day in this house you are practicing to be the amazing man you will be someday.” Kingston: “Ok..” After he fell asleep last night our conversation played over and over in my head. I tell my son he’s the man of the house not to put pressure on him or to even expect him to do things a “man” would do. I’m very aware that he is five and preserving his childhood is my main concern. My heart’s desire is simply to empower him to be exactly who God has designed him to be. Who he’s deigned all men to be. I don’t always give the right answers, I mess up, say stupid things or my timing is off. Im your average parent. But one thing I am confident in, and I hope you are too, is telling my child regularly who he is because I know if I don’t, the rest of the world will. And that is a terrifying thought.
