Knut Kenya KNUT/PRESS/88/4/2014 August 27, 2014 PRESS RELEASE A NEW COLLECTIVE BARGAINING AGREEMENT: The 214th National Executive Council meeting of the KNUT held on 20th August, 2014 deliberated on many issues some arising from the Annual Delegates Conference of 2013 and gave directions to the National Steering. The KNUT has raised a lot of concern in the manner the Teachers Service Commission, the teachers’ employer is prodding teachers to take industrial action by not honouring what it agrees and signs with the teachers. Following the famous strike of last year, in which top Union leadership was incarcerated, we signed a return-to-work formula on 18th July, 2013 that specifically provided amongst other issues, “that the Parties agree on and obtain registration of a Collective Bargaining Agreement as required by the law within ninety days (90) from the date hereof”. These 90 days ended on 16th October 2013. We wrote a reminder on 24th April, 2014 and to date the Consultative Committee on Terms and Conditions of Service has not been convened. Yet the teachers are aware that a Collective Bargaining Agreement should have been concluded and signed by the 16th October, 2013 to cover a cycle of 4 years up to 30th June, 2017 as per Salaries and Remuneration Commission Circular No. SRC/ADM/CIR/1/13/118 dated March 21, 2014. This is extreme provocation on the part of the Teachers Service Commission and the teachers’ patience has run to the end, especially noting that almost all other sectors in Government including the political wing have managed to circumvent the salaries and Remuneration Commission and awarded themselves hefty pay increases. Now the Kenya National Union of Teachers with the authority of the National Executive Council and Annual Delegates Conference is DEMANDING that the Consultative Committee on Terms and Conditions of Service be convened within 21 days from yesterday the 26th August, 2014 and conclude an acceptable Collective Bargaining Agreement within the same period. Failure of which, the employer shall be provoking Teachers to an Industrial unrest at the expiry of the said period. (WILSON SOSSION) SECRETARY GENERAL K.N.U.T.
