Ko te Rāpare tēnei, This was too cute not to share. Teach them while they are young and their minds are like sponges. The All Blacks has made this haka renown worldwide and it is fair to say, that when people visit New Zealand they want to see this more than anything else. When I was overseas and performing in Dubai this was the most requested item from an audience. We did all sorts of items including all of the different Polynesia Islands however everyone wanted to see the Haka. Anei ngā kupu mo te haka Ka mate, ka mate, Ka Ora, Ka Ora, Ka mate, Ka mate Ka Ora, Ka Ora Tēnei te tangata puhuruhuru Nana i tiki mai whakawhiti te rā A upane, A kaupane A upane kaupane whiti te rā Hi! I was taught that the haka Ka Mate was created as Te Rauparaha a Ngāti Toa Chief was fleeing from an ope taua (War party) He hid in a hole in the ground in a Kumara Pitt and started chanting: Ka mate, Ka mate, Wil I die, will I die? Ka Ora, Ka Ora Will I live? Tēnei te tangata Puhuruhuru In this section of the waiata Te Rauparaha is referring to a woman that is hiding him by obscuring him while he hid in the kumara Pitt. When she moved away from hiding him Te Rauparaha saw the sun beaming. Te Rauparaha took this as a sign that he would live. He speaks of the ope taua moving this way and that however at the end of the day the sun still shone and he was still alive. The haka was done usually before a war, as it got the right side of the brain and the left side of the brain working together. It also was used to psych up the Māori warriors, these days it is used for just about anything as a haka tautoko for birthdays, funerals, special occasions such as graduations or before rugby games. When it is done with ihi, wehi and wana, the wairua within someone takes over, you will see the change in people and I think if they walked over hot stones or glass they wouldnt feel it, because they are in that zone. Kia pai to koutou rā!
