Kudos to Channel 4 Detroit for getting this story right!! Other media outlets mentioned such things as angry bees and even crazed bees. At least none said Killer Bees. (Honey Bees and Yellow Jackets are not the same insect) Bottom line: Kids got off the boat and the yellow jacket nest was disturbed and the hornets reacted in their finally tuned and painful response. EMS handled it with professional creativity.. Hospital handled it very well. And there were no allergic reactions. I found this story of interest because I have led school groups to Apple Island back when I worked down in West Bloomfield. (There is some question if it was yellow jackets or hornets--but both are wasp family critters. Honey bees were not involved! ) And now its time to get off line---logged on in Empire, Michigan as I prepare for a morning excursion to a much wilder island at sunup: North Manitou Island, 11 miles out in Lake Michigan. A backpacking weekend with rain and maybe sleet in the forecast. Lucy Deb
