Kurt Vonneguts War: Over 6,000 U.S. Army prisoners were taken by the Germans, four days after the beginning of the Battle of the Bulge. In the greatest mass surrender of American forces since Bataan, the 422nd and 423rd regiments surrendered after days of encirclement on the Schnee Eifel on the German border. The most famous captive was Kurt Vonnegut with the 423rd Regiment who would later say: The other American divisions on our flanks managed to pull out; we were obliged to stay and fight. Bayonets arent much good against tanks In a letter home after the end of the war, he detailed the misery of being a prisoner during its last months. Photo of Pfc.
