#LA: As I previously mentioned, I find it narrowly focused that we’re trying to put a policy in place as to how we handle and limit impromptu street/roadside memorials, those shrines that commemorate the deaths of members of the public, at the same time we’re pulling out all the stops for police officers. That may give off the vibe that some lives are more valuable than others. What about civilian employees & victims of homicide, traffic collisions, or worse victims of a shooting at the hands of an LAPD officer? You can read more about my position here. Los Angeles Urban Roundtable President Earl Ofari Hutchinson also voiced his concerns about the memorials this week. I think community members and businesses should be able to give input before a sign goes up. I don’t know that businesses would like to broadcast the fact that an officer was killed in their parking lot. Officers killed in the line of duty are memorialized at their respective assigned stations , memorial structure at the Police Administration building, annual memorial celebrations at the local, county, state and federal levels so it’s not like these men and women are dying in vain; that’s the furthest thing from the truth.
