LAGOS ACQUIRES 1,084 HECTARES OF LAND FOR FARMING Lagos State Government has said the present condition in the northern part of the country is hampering its willingness to acquire land in the region for its agricultural purposes. This was disclosed by the State Commissioner for Agricultural and Cooperatives, Prince Gbolahan Lawal at the annual press briefing by his ministry to commemorate the 3rd year of the second term of Mr. Babatunde Raji Fashola administration in the state. He said the state had acquired 1,084 hectares of land in Osun state for oil palm processing , Agric-YES and other agricultural purposes while 500 hectares of land was acquired in Eggua, Ogun State for rice production adding that the state had received the titles on these lands, as bought lands by the state. Prince Lawal said the state had renewed its interest in investment in Agriculture with consideration for areas where it has advantages over others which are in Rice production, Poultry farming and Aquaculture to make up its contribution to food security in the State by year 2020. He further said that the State Government has involved all the stakeholders in the production of hygiene red meat in the state, adding that the process which start from the transportation of live animals to modern slaughtering, meat processing and the distribution of the meat through refrigerated vans have been consented to by all stakeholders. He said that 6 months moratorium has been granted to the 4 newly approved abattoirs at Matori, Ilaje, Ikorodu and Oto-Awori to operate at the State set standard. Prince Lawal said the State is concerned with the plight of producers of perishable farm produce, noting that 40% of their products were lost through daily spoilage saying that the state is poised at averting the problem by 25-30% by looking into the ways of moving their produce swiftly using modern transportation and packaging methods. He maintained that the over 13,000 cooperative societies that were registered in the State with over 2.5 million membership has more than sixty billion Naira asset base. While required a well informed 4, 240 executive members have to far been trained on cooperative management at the State cooperative college.
