LANDING GIFT SHOP & CHANDLERY OPENS IN NEW BEDFORD NEW BEDFORD — The Landing Gift Shop & Chandlery joins the many new and established businesses in the New Bedford Whaling National Historical Park. This one started with a torn scallop bag. Laurie Elby Botelho launched her first business on the idea and inspiration that she could produce a better bag for New Bedford landed scallops or, what she calls the diamonds of the sea. Scallop bags are now the mainstay of her New Bedford based business — Diamond Marine Supply. From that experience with her first entrepreneurial venture came another revelation. Imagine, she thought, a retail store that attracted and serviced both tourists and commercial fishermen. Elby, as she is better known, recently opened her newest enterprise — The Landing Gift Shop & Chandlery in the New Bedford Whaling National Historical Park. Its located at 98 Front St. between the Rose Alley Ale House and Cork Wine & Tapas. Never satisfied, she had investigated what type of souvenirs were available to visitors and tourists and found that they did not represent the history, cultural tradition and quality of the area. They were not authentic as she thought they should be. The shop, which has been open several weeks, will officially have its grand opening this week, just in time for the arrival of New Bedfords own Charles W. Morgan, the last whaleship afloat. To celebrate the stores opening, she launched the Made in New Bedford campaign via social media to seek out the best the SouthCoast has to offer in the new store. Interested artists, artisans and craftsmen have been asked to submit photos and a brief description of their work to facebook/thelanding98.
