LATVIA: New Indoor Project Brings Shrimp Farming to Colder Climates A shrimp farming project is currently underway in Riga, Latvia, producing high quality shrimp in a Recirculating Aquaculture System (RAS). The project, which began in May 2014, uses an intensive biofloc RAS which has 100 per cent water recirculation and zero discharge, meaning it has no negative effect on the environment. As well as being a more sustainable farming method, the farm is also easier to run due to its automated monitoring and management systems Mere Shrimp Farms is currently estimated to produce two tons of Litopenaues Vannemei shrimps per year. Located close to market, the farm boasts that its gourmet sushi grade shrimp are produced without the use of antibiotics, preservatives or chemicals and are available all year round. The farm is now expecting its first harvest of three hundred kilos (25-30g each) of shrimps. So far, the project is proving to be profitable with the first payback taking between one to three years. With good demand, high product price and little competition, farms are economically viable. Estimated costs for the pilot project (producing two tons per year) are €120,000. For a farm producing 500 tons a year, costs are likely to be around €12,000,000. Due to demand for fresh high quality shrimp, the project will also be expanded to other European cities including Berlin, London, Vienna and Warsaw. Thefishsite
