LCSO & LCFR Provide Safety Tips to Avoid Window Falls sheriff.loudoun.gov/windowfalls Loudoun County, VA- In light of a nearly-tragic incident the Loudoun County Sheriff’s Office and Loudoun County Fire, Rescue and Emergency Management, remind parents to be careful when they leave windows open to let in fresh air and enjoy the warmer weather. On Monday, emergency personnel responded to a residence on Chase Heritage Circle in Sterling where a 23-month-old child fell from a third story apartment window. The child was apparently leaning against a screen when it gave way. Fortunately he only suffered minor injuries. Serious incidents such as this case are an often-overlooked safety issue for children. The National Safety Council offers these tips to protect children from window falls: • Keep windows closed and locked when children are around. • Only open windows that children cannot access. • Avoid placing furniture near windows to prevent children from climbing. • Do not rely on insect screens to prevent a window fall. • Enforce rules to keep children away from playing near windows or patio doors. • Install building code-compliant devices designed to limit how far a window will open or window guards with release mechanisms to help prevent a fall. Residents are also encouraged to buy small wind-up devices, if you don’t have cordless window coverings, to gather window cords and elevate them out of a child’s reach. These cords can result in injury or even death if a child becomes entangled.
