LEEK & DISTRICT SUNDAY FOOTBALL LEAGUE ROUND UP Sunday 3rd November 2013 Three Leek and District Sunday League Teams were involved in Macclesfield Cup action vying to get through to the next round. Valiant Troggs were drawn against fellow Leek side Bayern Red Lion both of whom reside in the top four of the Leek &District Sunday League. In what was a very tight evenly matched game neither team could get a goal that they were so desperate to get before half time. The second half was similar to that of the first with both teams creating good chances but neither finding the elusive goal to break the deadlock. It remained even until the sixty sixth minute when Mitch Cartlidge scored for Troggsand even then the game could have gone either way until midfielder Mike Keates doubled Troggs lead to secure their spot in the next round. Vale Hoppers last season’s runners up in the cup must have fancied their chances as they were drawn at home at Back Lane Conglton against Poynton Legion 2 a team from the East Cheshire Sunday League who are currently bottom of Division Three. Hoppers hit Poynton for six booking their place in the next round of the cup. Hoppers went into the break 3-1 up thanks to goals from Matt Rushton, Adam Smith and Ryan Speak, Jake Richardson pulled one back for the visitors but Hoppers were to strong for them. The second half was all Hoppers as they put another three goals past Poynton as Paul Spruce, Lance Thompson and Ryan Speak scoring his second of the game. The Railway Inn having beaten Waterhouses in their last league were keen to get back in to league action after not playing the previous week, but were facing a strong wellington side who currently sit fifth in the league. Wellington having lost against Bayern Red Lion last week were keen to get their season back on track. Unfortunately Railway with a long list on injuries were struggling to field and the lack of first team players showed as they were soundly beaten by Wellington who got back to winning ways inspired by veteran player manager Luke Ford playing left back rolling back the years. Nick Webster started off the scoring within the first minute of the game and Railway to their credit despite everything held out until the thirty seventh minute when Chris long scored a rare header to double Wellingtons lead going into the break. The second half was all Wellington as they created chance after chance as a result of some poor railway defending and Wellington punished Railway with Matt Shone, Lawrence Hagan getting a brace and both Long and Webster getting their second goals of the game. Valiant were keen to keep their unbeaten run going and it was Wellington United who stood in the there way this week. It was a close first half and only a goal from Valiant centre back Darren Bloor separated the two teams at half time. The second was in contrast was all Valiant with Valiant putting another four past the United keeper thanks to Joel Dawson, Lee Fower, Rory Cordon and Richard Smith. Valiant remain top of the league for the second week on the trot although some of the teams do have games in hand that could potentially knock them off top spot. Elmo’s having thrashed Caverswall in the cup last week played hosts to Waterhouses who have lost their last three league games and were keen to get their season back on track but Elmo’s proved far too strong for them as Elmos soundly beat them 7-1. Waterhouses held out until the twentieth minute when Jim McMullen scored for Elmos, Matt Anderson got Elmos second eleven minutes later and Andersons second on forty two minutes made it three going into the break. Similar to that of the first half Waterhouses held out for fifteen minutes before Mitch Shenton scored for Elmos and although Alex Walker pulled one back for Waterhouses it was not enough to worry Elmos as Anderson completed his hat trick and both Greg Johnston and Sam Pettit scoring. Elmos moved up a place to second in the league one point behind valiant but with a game in hand. Hare & Gate Strollers were at home to The Ash Inn at Birchall and with Ash Inn not having any points in the league yet Strollers fancied their chances.Matt Knight scored for Strollers after only fourteen minutes, which was quickly followed by another goal for Strollers this time from Ian Hicks. Scott Faulkner pulled one back for Ash Inn but Hicks quickly replied with his second of the game to restore the Strollers two goal lead going into the break. Any ideas that Ash Inn had of getting something out of the game were quickly knocked out of them as Strollers hit another for past them thanks to a brace from both Tony Hulse and Alex Peters and an own goal from Josh Callear. Dyers Arms FC still trying to get their season back on track faced Biddulph Town Diamonds who were sitting mid table in the league. With only a bare eleven dyers played a younger and fitter side, but from the start dyers controlled the game with player manager Dan Johnson and winger / forward Shane Charlesworth providing a solid defence. Dan Evans and Matt Birchallwere pulling the strings in midfield against a Biddulphteam that just would not stop running at them. Dyers took the lead thanks to goal from Marc Cooke after twenty minutes. Biddulph kept probing the Dyers defence but could not find a way past Dyers stand in keeper Liam McDermott. Dyers doubled their leadthanks to Dan Evans as Biddulph chances at goal were limited. Luke Shelly scored a great headed goal for Biddulph but it was too little too late a Dyers took all three points.
