LEGISLATURE The legislature is the organ of government which makes laws for the country; it can also be called the citadel of democracy. The history of the Nigeria legislature could be traced to 1900 and 1915, when Lord Lugard started the Nigeria Council. Between 1915 to 1914 the legislature was completely dominated by the executive and as result most of the executive decision were favored and prevailed, more than the decisions of other members. Later, when Nigeria became a federation, the constitution, which provided, for both the central legislature and Regional Legislature became effective in its deliberations. In Nigeria from 1959, the federal parliament was made up of the House of Representatives and Senate, which elected its Presidents to preside over its affairs. This National Assembly made laws for the whole country. The Regional Legislature was made up of the House of Chiefs who included the Governor and House of Assembly. The Regional House of Assembly made laws for the Regions. From 1999 democratic governance still date, National Assembly the (senate) precisely has been turn into a league of veterans. The senate which is the upper chamber of law making body in Nigeria has been hijacked by the cabals. Senate is now a resting place for state governors who have completed their tenure, it is obvious that with the questionable personalities in the senate their wouldn’t be any good legislation to move Nigeria forward. Question must be asked on the credibility, integrity, responsibility and personality of our senators, why should retired state governors from lawless state represent the people in senate, why should two third of the senate be retired state governors. This is the evidence of anarchy in Nigeria. It is because of the incompetence of our legislature that President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan appoint delegate to the National Conference to legislate a way forward for Nigeria, if the elected law makers who have the people’s mandate were competent enough why should individuals perform their statutory function. Many states Governors who their tenure expires come 2015 are declaring their intention to go for senate, including a state governor from a lawless state in south eastern part of the country, my question is what is he going to senate to legislate on where you cannot even make good laws in your state, to worsen the whole scenario the People’s Democratic Party are offering automatic ticket for its state governors for senate come 2015, making the Senate League of Veterans. But we the citizens have a role to play by voting out this Cabals who have nothing good to offer us. Let’s know what you think about this because I can only do it with YOU.
