LEND YOUR VOICE TO HELP MAKE LASTING CHANGE As many of you know, LICADD has been working with LIRA, FIST and a wide range of other advocates to urge passage of state legislation that will take treatment decision-making out of the hands of insurance companies and put it where it belongs - in the hands of health care professionals. The bill will help put an end to fail first policies that push patients into outpatient settings despite a clear need to inpatient care and will mandate appropriate lengths of stay. All Long Island members of the Senate and Assembly have signed on as bill co-sponsors and the legislation now sits in each houses Insurance Committee, where without a strong push, the bills could die. You can help increase access to care for people with substance use disorders by taking the following simple action today: Call NYS Assembly Insurance Committee Chair Kevin Cahill at 518-455-4536 and tell him to put Assembly bill #7003a on the Insurance Committee agenda for a vote. Then call NYS Senate Insurance Committee Chair James Seward at 518-455-3131 and tell him to put Senate bill #4623a on the Insurance Committee agenda for a vote. If you are a person in recovery who has benefited from treatment, or if you have a family member who has encountered barriers to care, feel free share your story. If you are a treatment professional who has watched too many die of overdoses or wind-up incarcerated in the face of insurance company denials, feel free to note that, too. Both calls will take you less than two minutes and with your help, well be a step closer to making appropriate and comprehensive treatment on demand available to those who need it.
