LET US KEEP THE PEACE BEING TEXT OF BROADCAST BY HIS EXCELLENCY, HON. DAMESHI BARAU LUKA, DEPUTY GOVERNOR, NASARAWA STATE ON THE ERUPTION OF FRESH VIOLENCE IN OBI AND ASSAKIO TOWNS OF THE STATE, SATURDAY, 14TH SEPTEMBER, 2013 Dear people of beloved Nasarawa state. On behalf of His Excellency, Umaru Tanko Almakura, the Governor, I wish to express the deep concern of Government over the eruptions of fresh violence in parts of Obi and Assakio towns and their environs in the past two days. This unprovoked attack by some Eggon youths suspected to be members of the outlawed Ombatse cult on the innocent people of Adabu and other parts of Obi, as well as Assakio towns is, to say the least, barbaric, condemnable and an affront on the security of lives and properties of innocent citizens. While Government condemns the unwarranted attack unleashed on Obi Community and indeed the State, by this banned militia group, we wish to call on those involved in the breach of peace to stop the mayhem forthwith. Government wishes to state categorically that it will not stand by and watch these heartless criminals in our state unleash a reign of terror on innocent citizens of the state. We want to assure members of the general public that the State Government has taken necessary measures to bring the matter under control. Accordingly, security operatives have already been deployed to the affected areas to maintain law and order. In this vein, the law enforcement agents will deal decisively with any individual or group caught fomenting trouble or causing mischief. Meanwhile, members of the public are advised to be calm and go about their lawful businesses without fear of molestation. We all must, however, shun rumour mongering and spreading of false information that are capable of exacerbating this condemnable incident. Finally, Government expresses its sympathy to all those affected by this dastardly act. Government appeals to the good people of Nasarawa State, to continue to be their brothers and sisters keepers as we have no other state to call our own. Lest we forget, peace is priceless, let us keep it! Thank you and God bless.
