LETS GET ANOTHER WIN BY ENSURING EX-IM BANK IS NOT RE-AUTHORIZED!! Have you signed up for an invitation to Sentinel Summit 2014? Dear Ye Sun, Great work putting DACA at the forefront of the border crisis discussion last week! Congressional recess is your best time to educate! Take advantage of town hall meetings (or make a phone call, or pay a visit to the District office) to let your Member know where youd like him to stand on the Ex-Im Bank, and other matters of importance. Weekly Call Notes (8/4/14) The House and Senate are not in session this week. Immigration: Last week, the House passed two bills in response to the President’s emergency budget request to help manage the situation at the southern border. The first provided $694 million in funding, with several addendums to make it easier to facilitate the return of unlawful immigrants. The second measure effectively froze the President’s unlawful Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program that has been established as the root cause of the influx at the border. Earlier this month, virtually no one in Washington was targeting the DACA program as a source of the crisis. The grassroots megaphone snapped DC to attention, set the program on center stage, and now House Republicans have reclaimed the high ground in the immigration debate and sent a clear message to the Obama Administration: Unilateral amnesty is not an option. Export-Import Bank: As another congressional recess kicks off, it is tempting to perceive member absence as inactivity, but the fight is still very much ongoing. The issues members hear about at home will inform their positions upon return, when the Export-Import Bank debate will resume. While many special interests continue to offer half-measures like “reforming” Ex-Im or offering pro-coal provisions along with its re-authorization, most have already realized that the only true solution is to allow Ex-Im to expire for good. Only a brief window remains before the charter expires and the crony institution can no longer operate. Sentinels should keep the pressure applied on Congress during the home stretch. >>Contact your Members of Congress using the Dashboard: heritageaction/congress/. And remember, when you call the office, ask to speak with the staffer in charge of the issue. And share your action with us! Veterans’ Package: Last week, both chambers voted to create a new entitlement provision that provides veterans an external care option--CBO’s previous estimate of this program indicated it could generate a $500 billion price tag over ten years. This new spending is in addition to current costs of VA health care, which in 2013, amounted to $52.5 billion. The Miller-Sanders package fails to address to the systemic failures at the VA that have placed the health care process on such precarious footing in the first place. As Heritage Action’s south central regional coordinator and military veteran Wade Miller explained, “A functional, cost-effective VA health care system is crucial not just for the vets of this generation, but to tomorrow’s servicemen and women, as well. Any solution that is not sustainable in the long term leaves future veterans in the lurch.” Sentinel Summit: heritageaction/sentinelsummit./ Please call or email if you have questions, or need resources for your meeting with Members. Dont forget to refer to the Heritage Action Scorecard to see how conservatively your Member votes. Thanks for all you do!
