LETS KEEP THEM PLAYING RUGBY :) What a day for a Rugby game - beautiful day on the field!!! Some of us were at the clubhouse early running the 1600 m, the 40 m sprint and for plank testing. Then the club women started to show up to get ready for their game. Apparently a player showed 40 minutes early and did not see others in the dressing rooms and tweeted the game was cancelled - thus unfortunately some players turned around and missed a great day on the field. What a loss!! One young women deserves a lot of the credit for keeping the Newfoundland club Rugby game going for the women. Sarah Mathieson, coach for the Swiler women has recruited players, provided consistent training sessions and coached players from both teams when another coach was not available. All in an effort to grow the game for the women. Credit is also due to Damian Hearn, the Bay and Simon Blanks with the Dogs for the great job they do with the womens teams in their clubs. Without consistent coaching there would be no game. When there are not enough girls at one club to make up a team, the clubs now have clusters, where clubs join up for matches. This ensures girls have the opportunity to play regular competitive matches. Lately things have been looking up a little and many new players from high school and players from away attending MUN have come out to play. Due to having large numbers of new and new-to-here players the cohesion is not quite there yet. In rugby, timing is important. You have to know when to pass to this person, when to run to support or when to kick. It is hard to get the timing right and pull off these moves when players have not trained together. Great game today -everyone wins when they get to play!!! Lets keep them playing Rugby :)
