LG reviews issue pertaining to nursing fraternity Port Blair, July 11: The Trained Nurses Association of India, Andaman & Nicobar Branch met the Lt. Governor recently to reiterate some of the demands that their National Association had raised before him in February 2014. The Lt. Governor reviewed the matter with the Chief Secretary, Commissioner-cum-Secretary (Health) and Director of Health Services. Commissioner-cum-Secretary (Health) informed the Lt. Governor that recruitment of nurses for around 24 vacancies is in process and the written examination in this regard is scheduled on 17.8.2014 at JNRM, Port Blair. With the filling of these vacancies, the nurse-patient ratio, especially in GB Pant Hospital, Port Blair will improve substantially. The Director(Health) informed the Lt. Governor that the Directorate has already contacted all the Union Territories for the RRs followed by them in respect of Nursing Tutor and Principal Nursing Officer so that their case for extending higher grade pay can be considered. Lt. Governor directed the DHS to get in touch with various UTs personally and expedite the matter. The DHS informed the Lt. Governor that all the Nurses and Nursing sisters have been extended the benefit of MACP. On the intervention of Lt. Governor recently, 11 Tutors have been declared as teaching personnel. Lt. Governor directed that grant of MACP benefit to the tutors be taken up as per rules at the earliest. Regarding implementation of Nursing cadre at par with Central Government norms, it was discussed that since the UT has a small Nursing cadre, one has to be pragmatic while implementing the cadre in this UT. As regard regularisation of services of Nurses attached to SNCU, the DHS informed that such regularisation is not possible. However, the said nurses can appear for the recruitment examination scheduled on 17.8.2014 if they are eligible as per rules. It was observed that temporary enrolment cannot become a conduit for regular appointment and due procedure has to be followed, else other eligible candidates will get deprived of the opportunity due to them. It was also observed that considering the small Nursing cadre, this UT cannot afford to start a full-fledged Nursing Directorate. However, arrangement from the existing available manpower/current strength will be made to look after the interest of nurses. In the absence of suitable candidates with qualification of MSc. Nursing, and since the RRs are under formulation, it is not possible to post a regular Principal in School of Nursing, GB Pant Hospital immediately. Lt. Governor directed the Health Department to work out a suitable interim arrangement. The Lt. Governor further observed that he has received complaints from many common citizens regarding the insensitive behaviour of nurses towards patients and their relatives. He appealed to the nursing fraternity that their focus should be on providing better service and displaying utmost sensitivity towards the common man and advised the Association to work towards this objective.
