LIFE ON OUR NUT FARM – HEALTH DAY Michael and I had appointments this morning before his shift. He in his patrol car, I hopped in mine and we both headed the twenty-five miles to Coupeville, WA. The county offered Biometric testing to employees, spouses, and domestic partners. Michael has done this before, my first. Ten hours prior to the test, instructed to fast, only water or coffee. I had a cup of tea. We arrived on time, filled out the short, “bubble form”, fill in the circles with pencil, name address etc. Then we waited a few minutes for a station, technician to be available. She reviewed the four tests, Cholesterol Screening, Blood Glucose, Blood Pressure, and Body Composition. You receive the results soon after they are complete. Felt my hands, they were cold, she asked me to rub them together, better blood flow to the fingertips. Then she pricked my fingertip, squeezed it, the blood slowly going into a small glass-type of syringe. Next, she took my blood pressure, height, and weight. Michael was having the same tests, after he removed, gun belt, radios, two cell phones, several other pieces of equipment and tools, shirt, body armor and boots. It was a large stack on the floor next to him! After all tests complete, she handed me the pamphlet, and reviewed the results. Mostly good, a couple scores could be better…She explained, in my case, one of them was hereditary…Kenny!!! She said, the best way to improve another score that could be better…Exercise! I waited while Michael put all his gear back on. Then we looked at each other’s paperwork. Both hungry, we grabbed bananas from the table and both had his delicious banana muffins in our vehicles. I had an ice tea waiting as well! Next, I called my ninety-three year old father Kenny, decided to get our flu shots! He was up for it and said he would get dressed and be waiting at the front door of his assisted living facility. Twenty-five minutes later, Kenny got in the car and we headed to the pharmacy in Clinton. They were out of the flu vaccine for people over 65 years old! The first I knew there were age specific flu vaccines. The vaccine to be delivered this afternoon; we decided I would have my shot, the one that covers four types of flu. While we waited, the delivery person showed up with Kenny’s flu vaccine! After filling out his paper work, we both had a flu shot! I took Kenny back to his apartment, headed home, and back to work. It was a happy health day of preventative medicine! I will exercise tomorrow... Many Blessings from Our Nut Farm. September 30, 2014
