LIFE ON OUR NUT FARM – KENNY’S WINDOW My father Kenny’s apartment window overlooks the entrance of his assisted living facility. Every day, he gives me a recap of the traffic in and out. How many times the Aid Car came, the residents transported to the hospital, new residents moving in, and others are moving out, perspective clients, and visiting relatives. Today, my Ninety-three year old father and I had our pedicure appointments. When I picked Kenny up, he was at the front door, ready to go. After the appointment and a couple errands, we went back, parking under his window, at the entrance. Kenny pointed up and said, “I look out that window all day, watching the activity of the building.” We went up to his apartment; I cleaned a bit, organized, and watered his Poinsettias and Amaryllis flowers. I went home, cleaned a bit, organized, watered our flowers, and played with the Pets. Kenny called me, sitting by the window; he saw a familiar vehicle pull up. His best friend had just passed. His friend, a few months younger than my father, came to the dining room for his meals, and always had a smile and warm greeting. While he was in constant pain, he would tell me how nice I look. I have learned through the years of caring for my parents in assisted living, when you ask most seniors, “How are you?” they tend to tell you how bad it is. Instead, now my greeting is, “How nice it is to see them!” Tomorrow, the two friends were having a “Pre-Seattle Seahawks Super Bowl Sunday” Party. Kenny and I had purchased snacks and champagne for the pair. Sad for my father, and his friends family, I too will miss our friend. While few people make it to this age, until recently, a good quality of life, with his mind, he is now out or pain. My father will mourn, however it will be unnoticeable. At his age, nearly all his friends, acquaintances, and family members have long since passed. I am happy to be here for Kenny, and grateful for the time we have together. Thank you for being here. Many Blessings from Our Nut Farm. January 24, 2015
