LIVE. DIE. REPEAT. There is a new movie out called “Edge of Tomorrow” and I must admit, I enjoyed it. Tom Cruise was in his element with this random, sci-fi action movie. Loved it… but there was an interesting tag line that the movie had that had me pondering my faith… “LIVE. DIE. REPEAT.” Without spoiling the movie for those who haven’t seen it and intend to, the theme of the movie is the ability for a human who got special Alpha blood on him to live, die and repeat the day all over again as the Alpha blood was now mixed with human blood. This blood fusion gave this human being the ability to reset time. The only way he was able to do that was by dying. When he dies, the day resets and he gets to relive the day all over again and has the opportunity to grow in his skills, experience and strength as a warrior. Winner. Sounds a lot like Jesus invitation to repentance. I cannot help but compare and connect this to our growth journey as Christians. To live for Christ, to die to self and to repeat. John the Baptist had this pretty much down well before the writers of the movie came up with this… he said “He (Jesus) must be become greater and I must become less.” John 3:30… Also, the Apostle Paul had this same theme down too… “For me to live is Christ, and to die is gain.” Philippians 1:21. I wonder how often as Christians we wake up trying to change our own character raging war against our fleshly desires instead of just accepting the character of Christ already in us?! I wonder how many of us see growth as an attempt to try harder instead of trusting more. Often the journey of Christian growth is not found in trying to be more like Christ, it is trusting Christ more. If we want to grow in our faith and into everything God has for our lives and to be made more into what we would look like with Christ fully formed in our life we must remember to live, die and repeat. That every morning we would yield to God, die to self and repeat. For anything to live in our life, it requires the death of something. As humans, we are constantly challenged by negative character traits such as selfishness, anger and anxiety. If we want to see Godliness character traits come alive in our life, it requires the death of our ungodliness. Selfishness and selflessness cannot exist at the exact same time. Therefore, if you want selflessness to live in your life, selfishness must die. If you want love to live in your life, anger must die. If you want peace to live in your life, anxiety must die and so on. Here is the thing, we must be aware that when it comes to living out our Christianity and becoming more like Christ, there is a death involved. We have life because there was a death involved. Jesus. He died, so that we may have life. He came and took upon himself all our negative ungodly character traits that stemmed from our sin and impure motives and nailed it to a cross. He took our selfishness and gave us His selflessness, He took our anger and gave us His love, He took our anxiety and gave us His peace. He took our sin-full character to give us His Son-ship character. The only death that ever needed to take place was on the middle cross on the hill of Calvary approximately 2000 years ago… where the Saviour of the world uttered and declared so perfectly “It. Is. Finished.” Complete. Over. Done. Full Stop… death is finished… death died, love lives. He died so we can live. I often hear Christians say “I would die for Jesus”… that’s awesome and stuff but I am pretty sure Jesus doesnt want you to die… Jesus did not die for you to die for him, he died so you can live for and with him and live life in all it’s fullness and abundance in Christ (John 10:10). His life was and is the ultimate Live. Die. Repeat. He lived, He died, and now He reigns. He is the Alpha and the Omega, the Beginning and the End, the Source and our Saviour. Jesus. He made time, split time and upholds it. He is the only One who can wipe all your mistakes away and give you a true fresh start. Please note: Tom Cruise is not Jesus.
