LOCAL NEWS Dog owners are being warned about the importance of having their dog vaccinated following a number of recent outbreaks of Parvovirus in the Antrim area. The virus is highly contagious and extremely difficult to eradicate. It is transmitted through dog faeces so it is essential that proper cleansing and disinfecting routines are carried out in areas where dogs are kept. Paul Chapman, Borough Warden, said: “This is a very nasty virus. It can survive and harbour on a range of materials including clothing, metal bowls, concrete floors and shoes. “It is recommended that a disinfectant such Parvo-virucide, which is specifically designed to eradicate canine disease, is used to disinfect areas where the dog is kept.” Paul added: “Symptoms which usually start to display within four to seven days of infection, include: fever, lethargy, vomiting and diarrhoea. “Dogs that have the virus become contagious within three to four days after initial infection. It rapidly attacks the cells in the animal’s body and can cause severe problems in the intestinal tract. Young dogs and puppies are extremely susceptible as their immune systems are very weak. “Dogs that have recovered from Parvovirus often have problems with their heart throughout the rest of their life.” For further information on Parvovirus contact the Dog Control Team at Antrim Borough Council T: 028 9446 3113 or your local Vet.
