Level 1, Felony Caused Death, POLICE Updated: 07/30/2014 2:41 PM Created: 07/30/2014 12:55 PM KSTP By: Jennie Olson Weve confirmed a Mendota Heights police officer was shot and killed during a traffic stop on Dodd Road near Smith Avenue in West. St. Paul around noon Wednesday. Police confirm the officer was shot in the head and was taken to a local hospital with serious injuries but has since died. Witnesses said they heard three gunshots in the quiet neighborhood. Sources say authorities are now looking for a suspect who fled the scene in a green four-door Pontiac Grand Am; it has turned into an all-out manhunt, with multiple agencies involved in the investigation and search. John Gouette, owner of Cherokee Service, told the Associated Press that he saw a dark green Pontiac Grand Am race past shortly after the shooting going more than 100 mph, with police in pursuit. The suspect has been described as a young white man in his early 20s. We’ve been told the investigating officers will soon be given a much more detailed description of the suspect. Officers originally set up a perimeter in a residential area on the 1900 block of Walsh Lane, but the main scene is now on Mendota Heights Road, which is near Delaware Avenue and Interstate 494. Crime tape is set up in the area, the road is blocked off, and SWAT officers are geared up. It’s unclear if the suspect is still in the vehicle or is on foot.
