Eastern Airlines Flight 212 crashed on Sept. 11, 1974, short of the Charlotte-Douglas International Airport, killing 72 people on the flight. The DC 931 was en route from Charleston, SC to Chicago with a stop in Charlotte. On its instrument approach for landing, the plane crashed in dense fog short of the runway at South Tryon and Yorkmont Road. Seventy-two people died in the crash. Among those killed were the father and two brothers of comedian Stephen Colbert and three executives of Charlestons Post and Courier newspaper. Ten people people on the flight survived the crash. The NTSBs final report said the crash was caused by the flight crews lack of altitude awareness and poor cockpit discipline. Copyright 2014 WBTV. All rights reserved.
