LOST #survival #findnorth #whereami #stepintherightdirection #findsouth #lost #happycamper If you feel you are lost anywhere on this planet it will be helpful to know which way is North. A good place to start is preparing yourself at home with a compass before it ever happens. The best compass will cost you. (Suunto MC-2G Mirror Sighting Global Compass) but any reliable compass will do fine if you learn how to use it. There is a phone app. and satellite compasses. If you dont have one you might want to know other options. Practice when you leave the house find and remember which direction you are going. This may sound silly but many people when giving directions can only say go right or left. For larger distances you may here ...when you get to Xtown go North, East,West or South. When you are in the Bush or on open water you must know which direction you came from to have a chance to be able to get back home. There are several proven ways to find where you are on the Planet so you can make a step in the right direction. You can use nature to find your way without a compass. Moss will grow more on the North side of trees and hills are dryer on the South side. These two are general facts for approximate direction. However in many situations these are hard to detect and for accuracy cannot be depended on. There are too many factors to create these effects. Prevailing winds day or night. 1) In Ontario on clear days the prevailing wind is from the North West and on rainy/snowy days from the South West. Trees will have a lean away from the prevailing wind. This is a general guide but remember that our worst storms come from the North East. This is time to be seeking shelter and not be going anywhere. 2) On a clear night you can find Polaris (the North star). You will be facing North if it is in front of you. 3) In the day time you will need the Sun and there are several methods to help you find your way. a) You can use a wrist watch if it has hands and the correct time (remember about the daylight savings time adjustment if it is used in your area.) Point the hour hand at the sun and draw a line through the mid distance between the Hour hand and 12 oclock for your East West direction. We know the sun comes up in the East. b) If you have a digital watch you can create this image with slicks laying on the ground to mimic the hands on a watch face. c) On a sunny day at the Zenith of the Suns arc (noon or one oclock) you can stand facing your shadow. You will be facing North anywhere in the Northern Hemisphere and South in the Southern Hemisphere. If you hold your arms out to the opposite sides you will be pointing East and West. If you are right on the Equator you better have a compass and some sun screen. Remember the Day Light Savings Time change for the Summer. *The clocks change once in the Spring and again in the Autumn, in an attempt to make the most of the light. The clocks went forward on Sunday March 30 2014 at 1 am. The clocks go back again in the Autumn, on Sunday October 26 2014 at 2 am. 4) You can use a stick to mark the sun shadows. Place a stick or rock at the end of the shadow from the first stick. Wait 20-30 minutes and place another marker at the end of the shadow again. Draw a line from the first stick through the middle of the two shadow markers to point direct North and side to side for East and West. A crescent moon trick. The moon rises and sets in the south. If you connect the two points and draw an imaginary line to the ground you have found south. Special thanks to those who donate images to Google images for photo manipulation. #lioneleditart
