LPA off Palawan may become cyclone in 24 hrs ABS-CBNnews Posted at 08/05/2013 9:09 AM | Updated as of 08/05/2013 9:09 AM MANILA – The low pressure area (LPA) spotted off Palawan on Monday morning could become a tropical cyclone in the next 24 hours, weather bureau PAGASA said. In an interview with radio dzMM, PAGASA forecaster Samuel Duran said in case the LPA develops into a tropical cyclone, it will not directly affect any part of the country since it is already moving towards the West Philippine Sea. As of 4 a.m., the LPA was located 140 kilometers southwest of Palawan. Nonetheless, the potential cyclone is still expected to enhance the southwest monsoon (habagat), which could bring rains to the western portion of the Philippines, Duran said. The LPA will be named "Kiko" if it develops into a cyclone while still inside the Philippine Area of Responsibility. Due to the LPA, MIMAROPA and Visayas should expect moderate to occasionally heavy rains which may trigger flash floods and landslides. Light to moderate rains are expected over Metro Manila, Central Luzon, CALABARZON, Bicol Region and Mindanao.
